1:1 Financial Mentoring Program

Provides survivors of domestic abuse free, trauma informed and accessible financial mentoring to increase financial confidence, self-sufficiency, and agency. Sessions are 1 hour and virtual. The frequency of sessions will be dictated by need and the shared availability of the Mentor and Mentee. There is no cap on how many sessions a Mentee can participate in. 

Impact

As a volunteer in this program, you will have the opportunity to empower survivors to regain control of their finances, build financial stability, and create a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Lead 1:1 Financial mentoring sessions and provide information and support navigating topics like:some text
    • Understanding the current state of their finances
    • Setting financial goals and budgeting
    • Building credit and managing debt
    • Protecting their finances
    • Developing good financial habits
  • Utilize a trauma-informed, empowerment-based approach 
  • Support fellow volunteers seeking advice on how to best support their client
  • Provide program feedback to FinAbility

Commitment 

  • Sessions are held virtually for 1 hour
  • The frequency of sessions will be dictated by need and the shared availability of the Mentor and Mentee. There is no cap on how many sessions a Mentee can participate in
  • Commit to at least 1 year and support a minimum of 1 client a quarter
  • Spend 3 to 5 hours a month volunteering (with the option to increase your hours over time). This breaks down to:some text
    • 1 to 2 hours meeting with your client (depending on if meetings are monthly or every other week)
    • 1 to 2 hours scheduling, prepping, and debriefing meetings plus answering client’s ad hoc email questions 
    • 1 hour connecting with other volunteer mentors and contributing to the Financial Mentors Google Group

Application Requirements

  • Complete online application materials
  • Pass background check and provide referrals 
  • Meet with FinAbility staff for interview 
  • Proficiency in financial fundamentals including budgeting, credit building, debt management and financial goal setting

Training and Onboarding

  • Before being matched with a mentee, volunteers are trained in topics including the dynamics of domestic violence and how to provide trauma informed support
  • Initial training takes ~10 hrs upon joining the program 
  • Ongoing training opportunities are available
